Corfu & Saranda: A Mediterranean Paradise
If you’ve ever dreamed of turquoise seas, ancient ruins, and sunlit afternoons that stretch endlessly, the Ionian islands deliver. Corfu, with its Venetian charm, and Saranda, just across the water in Albania, form a perfect duo for a Mediterranean escape that blends relaxation, adventure, and culture in one easy route.
Exploring Corfu: History, Charm, and Endless Views
Corfu Town is the island’s beating heart—a maze of pastel buildings, narrow alleyways, and cobblestone squares. The Venetian influence is everywhere, from the elegant arcades of the Liston to the Old Fortress that watches over the harbor. Spend a slow morning wandering the old quarter, then linger at a café for a Greek coffee and bougatsa (custard pastry).
If you’re looking to stay close to the action but still want quiet views, the Aeolos Beach Resort sits just south of Corfu Town. Perched above the sea, it offers panoramic views, lush gardens, and a private beach—ideal for travelers who want resort comfort with local flavor.
The Beauty of Paleokastritsa
Few places on Corfu match the drama of Paleokastritsa, with its steep cliffs, emerald bays, and crystal water. It’s one of the island’s most photographed destinations for good reason. The area is perfect for snorkeling, paddleboarding, or simply floating in the sun.
Stay nearby at the charming Zephiros Traditional Hotel, a family-run spot within walking distance of the main beach. The simple rooms, warm hospitality, and proximity to tavernas make it a great base for exploring this postcard-perfect coast.
Agios Gordios: Sunsets and Slow Afternoons
On the island’s west coast, Agios Gordios offers long stretches of golden sand and some of the best sunsets in Corfu. The village itself has a laid-back rhythm, ideal for travelers who prefer evenings spent at a beachfront taverna with fresh grilled fish and a glass of local white wine.
For a balanced itinerary, combine a few days here with time in Paleokastritsa—one for rest, one for adventure.
Crossing to Saranda, Albania
From Corfu Town, it’s just a 30–40 minute ferry to Saranda, a lively coastal city on Albania’s Riviera. You’ll notice the contrast immediately: modern promenades, palm-lined boulevards, and a growing food scene that blends Mediterranean and Balkan influences.
Book your ferry ticket in advance on Direct Ferries or through local operators at the Corfu port.
Once in Saranda, stroll the promenade or head for the nearby ruins of Butrint, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that traces 2,500 years of history through Greek, Roman, and Byzantine remains.
The Blue Eye: Albania’s Hidden Gem
Just outside Saranda, a winding road leads to Syri i Kaltër, or the Blue Eye—a deep, crystal-clear spring surrounded by forest. The water is an impossible shade of blue, and you can hike short trails around it or picnic under the trees. It’s a short drive or an easy day tour from Saranda and one of Albania’s most breathtaking natural sights.
Food to Remember
Both Corfu and Saranda are destinations where you eat well without trying. In Corfu, order pastitsada, a spiced beef stew with pasta, or sofrito, veal cooked with garlic and white wine. In Saranda, seafood is the star—look for grilled octopus, mussels, and local rakia (fruit brandy) to finish your meal. There’s a shop I visit every time I’m in town, Sweet & Spicy, that has the best selection of hand-mixed seasonings and local products. Don’t miss it–The owner is a hoot!
Why Combine Corfu and Saranda
These two destinations balance each other perfectly. Corfu offers elegance and old-world charm, while Saranda delivers rugged landscapes and emerging energy. Together, they create a Mediterranean itinerary that feels both timeless and fresh.
You can plan your trip easily by flying into Corfu International Airport, spending a few days exploring the island, and then taking the ferry across for a few nights in Albania. From there, return to Corfu or continue north along the Albanian Riviera.
