Planning a Trip to Bremen, Germany? Here’s What to Know
Bremen is one of those German cities that tends to fly under the radar, which is exactly why it’s worth putting on your list. If you’re based in the Netherlands, it’s only about two hours by car from the Dutch border, making it a very doable weekend trip.
The city is probably best known internationally for the fairy tale of the Bremen Town Musicians, but there’s more to it than that. The historic center is built around the Town Hall and the Roland Statue, both UNESCO World Heritage sites, and they’re genuinely impressive in person. The architecture has that unmistakable northern European weight to it.
What’s interesting about Bremen is that it doesn’t feel like a museum piece. Walk a few minutes out from the old town and you’re in modern neighborhoods that feel completely different. The two parts of the city sit comfortably next to each other without one overwhelming the other.
Christmas market season brings extra crowds and extra charm, but the city is worth visiting regardless of time of year. There are also some good souvenir shops scattered through the old town if you’re looking to bring something back.
The video below covers a two-day trip to the city, including a look at the architecture, the atmosphere, and some specific shop recommendations. It’s a solid introduction if you’re trying to figure out whether Bremen belongs on your itinerary.
